Abstract

The article presents the history of the identification and study of Proto-Colchian culture, its chronology, terminological problems, and ethnocultural interpretations. It examines the views expressed by various scholars (L. Solovyov, T. Mikeladze, M. Baramidze, E. Gogadze, G. Pkhakadze) regarding Proto-Colchian culture and the periodization of its developmental stages. Stages I and II of Proto-Colchian culture, corresponding to the 3rd–2nd millennia BCE, are presented in detail.Particular attention is paid to the distribution area of this culture across the Colchis lowland and its interrelationship with the dolmen culture and other synchronous cultures.
The study also examines in detail the question of the ethnic attribution of Proto-Colchian culture and the role of the Svan-speaking population in its formation. We believe that the comparative analysis of the data presented in this article will make a significant contribution to the study of the ancient history of western Georgia.
